RESEARCH

A survey of University of Michigan students reveals how university life impacts brain health.

Discover current resources offered by the university and why there should be more.

INTRODUCTION

The ability to learn and engage in the classroom is largely dictated by one's brain health. Though universities should be fostering this connection, students experience many environmental obstacles to maintaining such health while in college. A survey of University of Michigan students found that such inhibitory factors include an increase in stress, alcohol and drug consumption, fewer opportunities for exercise, and a drastic decrease in sleep. We believe that university life should not compromise students' brain health for the sake of learning and growth, but rather value it for this reason. This website will provide current research in the field of brain health, our own research of University of Michigan students, and resources at that may make maintaining brain health more accessible. Overall, we encourage the University of Michigan and other universities to make brain health a top priority and create awareness among students about its importance.

ABOUT US

Hannah "Right Brain" Brauer

Roopa "Left Brain" Gorur

Hannah is a sophomore at the University of Michigan with a double-major in Communications/Creative Writing and a minor in Art & Design. Her work over the past year as a Communications Intern at the Alzheimer’s Association has made her critically aware of the importance of brain health and its potential effects if neglected. By working closely with Alzheimer’s patients and their families, she has become passionate about creating awareness for the disease, especially among young people. In her time at Michigan, she has experienced and noticed many difficulties in fostering a healthy brain, which can drastically increase one’s risk for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias in the future. Hannah is a photographer, writer, and runner who never wants to forget how to do the things she loves, and this motivation has kept her adamant in maintaining her brain health while helping others do the same.

Roopa is a freshman at the University of Michigan with an intended major in Chemistry. She has always had an active interest in brain health and how the huge amount of pressure can create a lot of stress for students. Roopa is currently working as a research assistant at the Michigan Nanotechnology Institute for Medicine and Biological Sciences, and enjoys her time there. However, she also likes to explore different areas of research, including the social sciences. Roopa enjoys running, hiking, dancing, and crafting and wants to continue to be able to do these things by improving and maintaining a healthy brain.
